/cgl/ is a board for the following:

• Cosplay
• Lolita
• J-fashion
• Conventions & gatherings
• Sewing & prop-making
• Craftsmanship tools/materials & tutorials
• LARPing
• Discussing accessories such as wigs/circle lenses/prosthetics/makeup (These must be within the context of the board-related topics listed above; weight loss threads should be kept in /fit/, beauty and fashion generals should be kept in /fa/)

Our board rules are simple:

• Thread content must be related to one of the categories covered in the list above. Off-topic threads and replies will be deleted.
• Singling people out maliciously is not tolerated and will result in a ban. 4chan is not your personal army. The singling out rule applies to vendetta threads and replies being made to attack a specific person, as well as predatory behavior like doxing. Discussing an individual in general isn't against the rules as long as it's done within context of cosplay/lolita/j-fashion.

Well hello, Florida Seagulls. It's been a slower year here, but I know you're out there and you know I'm out there. Our local scene keeps on with one location change after the other doesn't it? just came from kirbiicon
it was fun the venue was actually bigger than last year
they expanded more stuff in the parking lot so i got more to see

although i went alone because all my cosplaying friends moved out
>>
>>10913056
Yeah same. The extra space might explain why it felt a little emptier this year. It probably wasn't, just spread thin. I had to laugh watching all the randos off the street sneaking in through the opening next to the DJ bus
>>
>>10912904
Yeah, I was at Iwai, at the hotel party near the elevator. I think I did better at AWA, though.

So Otaku's less than two weeks away and their schedule hasn't dropped? Or is it just a badly run website? (Most con site are desu). I've got a free pass for Saturday but wanna know if Friday or Sunday's better

I'm a near-complete beginner to con culture and the "scene" due to zero exposure to it until recently and I have too many questions swimming around in my head that I need to ask. I've only been to a couple of small ones in my mostly-desolate area and I want to step up to traveling to bigger ones but I'm overwhelmed. Please bear with me.
>Do a majority of congoers cosplay? I know it's common, but is it seen as a faux pas to not cosplay?
>Likewise, is it seen as a faux pas to wear the same cosplay more than once in a multi-day event, or to not wear it some days?
>I've read a lot on this board about "after hours" events and parties that aren't scheduled by the con staff. Do you have to get invited to things like that, or how do people find out about them?
>Do cons that don't have a stated sub-demographic (ones that use terms like "fandom" or "pop culture" instead of specifically "fantasy" or "otaku" or something) tend to accept all demographics? Would you be looked at weird for going to something more "western" like SDCC in an anime cosplay, or would you expect to see a lot of them?
>Why do some huge cons like Colossal and Dragon seem to place such significance on getting a hotel room onsite as opposed to just being nearby? Surely not just traffic, right?
>What's a "gull"?
>How do you not get sick every time you go to one?
>How do you keep track of scheduling for multiple cons across multiple years? Do you get notified about them? When is "con season"?
>If you're partying, how do you deal with inevitable hangovers or crashes?
And some more personal questions
>If you cosplay, what's normally your budget? Both in terms of time and money.
>How do you make friends at a con if you're not going with a group?
>How many cons do you go to yearly or on a recurring basis? There are a fuckton I want to see but I'm not sure if my expectations are unreasonable.
Thank you for your time.

From the experience of people I know, jp cons pale in comparision to the big US cons, cosplay restrictions really kill the vibe, and you'll meet the occasional racism in sellers refusing to sell doujin to foreigners for fear of them scanlating it. But Japan is Japan, you'll still have fun.
>>
>>10913007
I'm not American, the biggest con I've been to was Japan Expo in Paris but from what I've seen on /cgl/ it's more or less organized the same way.

>you'll meet the occasional racism in sellers refusing to sell doujin to foreigners for fear of them scanlating it
I don't plan on scanlating anything to begin with, I hope there won't be any misunderstanding because of this. I look racially ambiguous but I don't think that's going to help in my case. I also plan on shopping in Akihabara's and Nakano's Mandarake but if I want new stuff I might as well get them during the con.
>>
>>10913014
Might be a lot more fun for you then, I've been to a few Euro cons and they were shit.

It's not like you walk up to a seller and announce you're going to scanlate. They assume just by the fact that you look or sound foreign that you're going to scanlate. If you look Japanese and either your Japanese is perfect or you can do the entire interaction without saying anything then you should be completely safe. If that's not the case just be prepared that someone may refuse to sell to you - and I'm not saying all sellers are like that but some are.
>>
>>10913158
This isn't just about doujins. As a white foreigner who speaks Japanese, when I tell Japanese people I consume anime/manga they often assume I do it illegally and they start to take an automatic moral stance. It blows their mind when I say I use Rakuten eBooks, Abema, Japanese Amazon Prime and so on and do it legally. Or maybe I've just met jerks.
>>
>>10913158
>>10913160
I'm French, and Japanese people usually know that France is nearly as obsessed with manga as they are so I doubt anyone will assume I read manga illegally. At least the ones I interacted with. Maybe they assume this because the first country they think of when thinking about the West is the US, and anime are way more popular than manga there and for a long time it was easier to find series by pirating them than by actually buying VHS or DVDs or blurays? idk I'm trying to understand.

>If you look Japanese
Absolutely not, the closest to this was when Indians in Japan assumed I was Indian and Pakistanis assuming I was Pakistani. I don't look Asian at all though, and certainly don't look mixed either.

and either your Japanese is perfect or you can do the entire interaction without saying anything then you should be completely safe.
I have an intermediate level in Japanese, I can do small talk easily but can make some mistakes here and there because I forgot a lot of words and kanji, and I'm not used to talking in Japanese in general. It's not a problem at all when shopping in actual stores but I don't know how conversations tend to go with sellers/fans in cons in Japan. How is it usually, you just say or show which doujinshi you want to buy and you give them your money, or can small talk happen? In small cons in my own country I've made small talk with some artists but Japanese cons look so crowded I have a hard time imagining it.

>>10912931
Its the other side of the coin that consumes yuri, untouchable middle age men that are sliding down the autogynephilic troons pipeline. both genres are just made for loser men/womenchildren to fantasize about fag teens in compromising situations.

most yuri is written by lesbians and intended to be consumed by lesbians.

i feel like it has to go out of the trend cycle at some point, i mean theyre called trend-hoppers for a reason. i just feel like its been getting particularly bad these past few months. i have been seeing some people lowering the price of old-school and old-school adjacent pieces to some extent on lm.
>>
>>10913130
this is true
also the funniest thing is she cries about current prices the most.
she’ll say she’s depressed because of the current prices but her blogs and fame chasing made it that way.
how do you expect to post about old school every second you get and act surprised when people start wanting the pieces you talk about kek
>>
is it possible to convince the lacemarket mods to ban scalpers, genuinely? Is this possible? What would the criteria be?
>>
>>10913186
if actual rule breakers don't get banned, what makes you think scalpers will? lm is hardly moderated anymore
>>
>>10913186
what they really need to do is pass the site on to people who actually want to manage it, or hire more mods.

>>10913159
they look fine, but the quality is really mediocre. the originals are leather and wood. most replicas are pleather and foam. sometimes that's a plus because they're easier to walk in and much cheaper. the baby victore RHS use wood and pleather so they're an interesting middle ground.

What are some cosplay stories that you'll remember for the rest of your life?

Wholesome: Cosplaying some My Little Penis characters with my then-gf when a little girl started freaking out over how great we looked. She got her dad to take loads of pictures with both of us.

Less wholesome: I saw a fur-suiter yelling at his wife.

Least wholesome: Walking to the convention center behind my friend's sister in her Sailor Saturn cosplay, on a windy day. She either didn't notice or didn't care that her bare ass was playing aggressive peekaboo with me. Only time I've ever wanted the walk from the hotel to be longer.

Sad: I was at Twitchcon when that lady broke her spine.

I once ran into Vic Mignogna while getting out an elevator at AnimeNEXT back in 2005. I was around age 15/16 and a big weeb obsessed with Fullmetal Alchemist at the time so I thought that was the coolest thing to happen. I even snapped a picture of him with my shitty disposable camera.

Although it’s kinda weird to look back at it now with all the sexual harassment allegations that came out
>>
I miss AnimeNEXT from the years before they went to AC.
I appreciate how popular they got, I just wish they didn't choose a venue in such a rough and expensive area.
There HAS to be a better option between Somerset, AC, and Edison; cuz that was the final nail in the coffin for them.
I told my friends we should start our own version of ANEXT and call it NextANIME and just do everything they did but with hopefully a little less suck xD
