/vrpg/ is a place to discuss all types of role-playing video games, including single-player, multi-player, and massively multi-player, turn-based and real-time action, western-style and JRPG.

Does this mean RPGs are banned on other video game boards? No! /vrpg/ is just a separate board specifically focused on RPGs where discussions about your favorite games can thrive.

Please familiarize yourself with the rules and remember to use the spoiler function where appropriate!

Please note that, like /v/, "Generals"—long-term, one-after-the-other, recurring threads about a specific game are not permitted on /vrpg/. Such threads belong on >>>/vg/.

I wouldn't say it's "that" unique. James Earl Jones did an American accent in Conan, and Val Kilmer did one in Willow.

I really enjoyed this and the sense of danger that came with exploring new areas.

Lost a lot of that bite when I found out just how easy it was to heal tho.

Level scaling completely ruins the entire point of RPGs. Why bother giving the player levels if the enemies are just going to get stronger anyway? It's just a lazy way for devs to "balance" the game so they don't have to consider combat encounters throughout. It should never be the case where staying low level is actually the optimal strategy, you shouldn't punish a player for playing the game.
Fuck level scaling.

Never thought about it like that, do you have other pearls of wisdom to bestow upon us?
>>
>>3470062
What's the point of leveling up if it makes the game easier and thus less engaging and thus worse? It should never be the case that a game is only challenging at low levels.

Scaling is why I finally dropped WoW after nearly 10 years of playing it like an addict.

To make it possible to do more dangerous things, or to handle a wider variety of things, or just to gate off options so you can learn to integrate them piecemeal

A light-hearted JRPG loosely based on the historical age of discovery, where people live on floating islands, and the developers biggest stated goal was to give players the freedom to explore. A unique game with surprising features you'd never expect to find in a JRPG and a rarely matched spirit of adventure. Does Skies of Arcadia still hold up?

The descent into deep sky is so fucking perfect. The fact that it isn't a cutscene and they actually let you do it. Last time I played it, I used my good audio setup with a subwoofer, and the fucking thunder made my whole house rumble. Shit was cash.

The whole game in general has brilliantly cinematic sound design, really. But that part stuck with me.

My favorite part of the Galcian fight (after Terminal) is that Guilder's counter-attack animation makes him look like he's popping a cap into Galcian's dick. Which seems like something Guilder might actually do.
>>
>>3469530
>These fights are seriously not easy, even with shitloads of consumables one slip up and its over.
I never found the finale this hard. The Zelos fight can be a bit of an ordeal, but most people forget how exploitable your crew abilities are. I always found most of the bounty hunter battles more difficult than the actual endgame.
>>
>>3470141
it's been a few years since I played, but I thought Sacrulen always went first in ship battles. At least it always did for me. I was almost never in danger of dying in ship battles once I learned it.

It probably didn't help that I didn't bother with captain stripes and wore the white map the whole game.

He talks plenty; more than Freya (who bizarrely remains a fan favourite), Eiko, Quina, even Steiner. You didn't play the game.
Why do idiots who didn't play a game insist on talking about it? It's very strange and mentally ill behaviour.

I always thought Amarant's purpose was even more simple; he's basically just there to contrast Zidane's inherently good nature.

Really enjoyed Avernum, the remake. The pseudo metroidvania exploration elements were really neat. How are the sequels?

Oh, also really enjoyed the item progression. Every magical, or even just decent, item felt like a real reward. Not just something to throw on the pile of other '+5 Longswords of Doom' I looted from a single group of enemies.

Avadon is on my shortlist for games to play next, after I finish my current IWDII:EE. Really interested on seeing how it feels in comparison to Avernum and how decent the NPC companions are.

Weird, in my run Philosopher originally died assimilated by the Orichalcum mech, I didn't even have the choice to continue with the Green Division route.
I guess both him and General are the ones where their story varies a lot depending on the routes, whereas Hero, Warrior and Lifetaker might be the more linear in terms of origin stories.
Love how Mags is literally too dumb to be turned into a complete thrall by Siugnas and thinks he's asking her to marry him.

Anyone got any tips on making magic feel good without going all-in on the magic formation? The basic spells for fire and wood feel weak for the two turn cast time with elemental affinity and spell skill about as high as I can crank them right now (7 and 9, respectively).
I imagine mid-game isn't exactly the best time to be experimenting with magic, but I finally got a chance to make a magic hairpin.

actually, expanding on this thought, is there like a compendium of competently written works? finding something good instead of baby's first cornyaoi slop fic when browsing has been a slight hurdle into getting into this stuff.

Decided to expand upon this a little and add extra options to enable/disable the border, as well as a simple "scale to window height" like the original PC UT release. I also put the project up on a Git repo for convenience.

(in this case trying to find martlet fics) and on the right there's an option sort by a multiple filters, so i usually sort by kudos, bookmarks or views. the other option is look for recommendations by other anons, but i wish there was a compendium for these things like you said
